Hi Ken,

I left Kenvir in 1947 and at the time I don't recall either of the two churches in the vicinity of the red store. My memories of Kenvir go something like this; As you crossed the old railroad tracks near the coal tipple going straight was the road to #2 camp, school and etc. Making a hard left put you in front of the company store which was on the right side. The first door on the right was for the main store, the next door to the left was the butcher shop and the 3rd and last door was the post office. There was no self service in the store. I can remember handing my grandmother's shopping list to Mr Howell who would pull the order. There was a large lot to the the left of the store with  gas pumps near the walkway. To the back was the bridge across the creek with the boarding house first, Rexall drug store to the left and last the saloon. The theater (show) was to the left of the large lot and a soda fountain was to the left of the theater. The soda fountain was referred to as the confectioneer store at the time. Next was the restaurant and then the dr's office. I lived in #1 camp past the dr's office camp. At that time the paved road ended near the first row of houses in dr's office camp. Walking home at night after a movie with no street lights was a real adventure if it was a moonless night.
Take care,

Glenn

PS: The picture I sent appears to have been taken when the
big school on the hill was first built around 1938-39. I
always assumed the school was a CCC project.

Hi Glen,

I wish I could have seen Kenvir in 1947, you have a very good memory.  Kenvir was a little different in those day's.  I remember the company store which was self service I believe, but I think it closed around 59 or 60.  I remember the butcher shop but the post office wasn't located there.  In the lot next to the store was the gas station, I never seen it open for business, it was a run down has been.  The little building for the gas station was small, maybe a 12x12 or something.  I always heard about the old saloon across the street and always wondered about it because harlan co. was always a dry county, I never got to see that building.  the old drug store was there but was closed for a long time and the family that lived in the big boarding house (mitchell fuson) opened it for awhile as a restaurant. It eventually burned down so did the old boarding house.  The only evidence of the drug store is the old concrete steps and platform, a ramshackle house now occupies the steps and site. Not to mention several run down trailers and shacks that sit in the area of the boarding house, it looks awful over there.  A junk yard occupies the area of the old gas station, its an awful looking site and my mothers house sits directly across from both of them.  Next is the theatre, I never got to see any movies there.  It was closed in my childhood days but being kids we found a way in there and did a lot of playing in there.  It eventually burned down too.  Next is the post office, which probably wasn't there in your day, Its your typical small, smalltown P.O.  Next is what was always known to me as the Black Mtn, restaurant, owned and operated by Cid and laura Robinson.  It was a great place to hang out!  We had a pool table, a couple pinball machines and a juke box.  They still served ice cream and fountain soda's when cid and laura operated it.  Of course it got in desrepair and burned down several year's ago.  Soooo  that area has changed quite a bit.  Up in no. 2 camp quite a few house's have been tore down, some remodeled.  At the end of no. 2 camp sit's the baptist church, It sit's in the bottom right before you get to the red store (which also burned down) a trailer now sits on the sight.  The methodist church that sit's above the red store caught fire several yrs ago, It's still there but haven't seen it since the fire but I do know a trailer sits up there too.  Not much left of colored camp anymore, but some still live up there.  From there up the place hasn't changed much other than the mine's not being there, they also removed the RR tracks a few yrs ago.  I'm going home July 4 for a week, I'll take some pictures and put them on line for you to view, plus you can put them in your web site  ;))  gotta go glen, if I can answer any questions for you or be of any help don't hesitate to ask, talk to you later.
