Past friends- Judy Jones and Doris Mills
Beginning in 1973 the youth and some adults from Tuckaseege Baptist Church in Mt. Holly, NC began traveling to Harlan County each summer to hold Bible schools in the churches in the various mine camps. I was one of the youth who participated, as at that time I was 13 years old. We were under the direction of our pastor, R. Mack Pressley. Preacher Pressley had formerly served as Baptist Missionary in Harlan County before coming to serve our church. Some of the churches that I remember holding Bible schools in were Putney, Sunshine, Willow Grove and a Baptist church in Kenvir. In 1974 I became very good friends with two girls in the Willow Grove community. These two girls were Doris Mills and Etta Mae Baker. I corresponded with Doris Mills for a long period after that summer and even was able to visit her on future mission trips. In 1975 I met Judy Jones at the Kenvir church. This church may have been named Black Mtn. but I'm not sure. Judy and I, as well as Doris and Etta Mae kept in touch for quite some time. Judy jones found my number and called me several years ago but I haven't heard from her or the others since. It has been probably 25 years since I last heard anything from Doris. All of these young ladies were born around 1959. If you can forward any info at all which would allow me to re-establish contact w/ these young ladies I would be sincerely grateful. If you know them, please contact them and tell them that I truly would like to hear from them.

Hi Glenn, ....  Thank you for your reply.  It is a small world.
Frank and Maude Hodges had 8 children one of which is my mother.
Gladys Pauline Hodges..my mother lives in Mich.
Mildred Hodges..deceased
Ruth Hodges ..deceased
Juanita Hodges Fuson...my beloved Aunt deceased
Louise Hodges Snyder Evans..lives in Louisville
Barbara Hodges Mc Clure...lives in Virginia.... Barbara Jean Hodges is the youngest of the 8 children.
This picture was probably taken after or just before the death of my grandfather in 1950.
Charles "Bunky" Hodges..lives in Beaver Dame
One child died very young.
When my grandfather was killed in the coal mines...Nov. 17, 1950...they lived in the first house in # 1 camp.  Mom says this picture was probably taken about that  time but the picture was not taken in front of their house as it had a fence around it.
[Note:  The Barbara Hodges picture was likely taken on the curve
into #1 camp from  the bridge .. glenn ]
I was in Black Mountain two years ago and the house they lived in then is still there.
Although I was too young to remember living in Black Mountain..I have many wonderful memories of my visits there with my Aunt Juanita and Uncle Mitchell.

I would enjoy  hearing from anyone who  remembers the Hodges' family in those days.
Thank You,
Joyce Hatfield Padrick

Hi Joyce,
Thanks for the family update.  I remember Mildred very well. She was a pretty girl and I was kinda sweet on her but she never paid much attention to me.  Trying to get her attention I pulled a very dumb trick on Mildred one day that backfired on me.  I filled one of Mildred's mitten's with the shavings from the pencil sharpener. Little did I realize that the shaved pencil carbon would turn the white lining black. Mildred was fit to be tied. She insisted that Mr King, our teacher and principle, introduce me to his "Board of education". Fortunately, for me, Mr King felt sorry for me and let me off the hook.  We completed the 8th grade in the spring of 1947. Is it possible someone in the family might  have a school picture of Mildred they would be willing to share?
Those were the good old days,
Glenn "Wagers" Robbins

I thought I'd add a little information to your treasure of history.  I was born in Kenvir in 1946 and lived there until 1954.  My parents were Dale and Evelyn Martin.  My dad worked as an electrician in the mine until being laid off in 1954.  We moved to Bartow, Florida in 1954, where my dad went to work in the phosphate mining industry which used a lot of the same equipment.

My brother is Gary and he attended Kenvir elementary through the sixth grade and I went through the second.  We lived in a company house near the bridge which crossed the river next to the railroad.  Our neighbors behind us were the Ledfords.  My mother sold homemade fried pies and we attended the Baptist church.  My brother and I use to play in a place called the "tub" which was across the tracks and was a hollowed out place in the rocks.

Levi Partin  japartin@prodigy.net    Feb 17, 2004
I am sending this for my husband, Levi Partin, who was born and raised in Kenvir.  He just found about about the reunion and Kenvir being on the internet late last year.

My name is Levi Partin and I was born in #2 camp in 1930.  I left in 1949, when I joined the army.  My parents were Vester and Delty (Howard) Partin.  I have an older sister, Dolly Burns, who lives in Augusta, GA., 3 brothers, Bill James, Richard and John.  Bill James and Richard are deceased and John lives in Arizona.  My dad worked at mine 31.  We lived in 31 camp and my sister went to school in Disney.  We moved to Red Bud where the Baptist Church was at that time, and where the new school is now.  I went to Evarts in the 1st and 2nd grades.  We moved to new camp and I went to Black Mountain school thru the 8th grade.  I remember my teachers were: Mrs. Creach in 3rd grade, Mrs. Ball in 4th grade, Mrs. Russell in 5th grade, Mr. Green in 6th grade, Mr. McNabb in 7th grade and Mr. King in 8th grade, who was also the principal.  I had a paper route for a couple of years in the middle 1940's. I started high school in Evarts, but dropped out after 5 weeks.  I remember going to the movies at Black Mountain, the restaurant, the post office.  Mr. VanPelt was the post master.  We would walk to church at Britton Creek.  My dad had a store in new camp, and I worked in it until it was sold.  He bought a house in Pound Mill, upon the hill, and there was a graveyard around the hill from  the house.  My dad passed away in 1958.  My mother lived in the house until the early 80's.  She had a stroke and went to live with my sister in Augusta, GA.  We would go back for a visit every 2 years until she moved away.  She passed away in 1986 and is buried in the family plot in #31 graveyard.
I went to work with my dad at Clover Darby Coal Co.  I worked there for about 6 months, when work go slow, I went to work at mine #30.  Mr. Thompson was my superintendent.  I decided loading coal was not for me and I enlisted in the army on Jan. 3, 1949.  I spent 3 years, 2 months and 8 days in the army.  I was in Korea for 17 months and 8 days and was discharged on March 11, 1951, which was my 21st birthday.  I went to Peoria, IL to work in Caterpillar Tractor Co. and was laid-off in 1953 and went to St. Louis to attend a school to be a diesel engine mechanic.  I graduated in 1954 and jobs were hard to get, so I went to work in a small factory, that I had worked at part-time while going to school, and retired from there in 1995.  I was married on Dec. 6, 1952 and had 2 children, a boy and a girl.  Our son died on July 29, 1993, from diabetes complications, he was 39 yrs. old.  We have 7 grandchildren and were married 51 years last December.  I have lived in St. Louis County, MO since 1954.  My niece sent a picture of a chair that was 100 yrs. old and made by Calvin Howard.  He was my grandfather.

Hello Glenn,
I am so happy I stumbled across your web page! I've been working on my family history and I think your page may help me quite a lot! My family history is colorful to say the least, but I want to learn more. So, here is some information on the people who lived in the Kenvir, Black Mountain area. My apologies if I have some names that are not from the area. I was a small child the last time I was in Kenvir, Kentucky.
My name is Michelle Cook and I am the daugher of Deanna Sue Messer. Deanna's mother is Myrtle Irene McCabe and her father is William Messer (he currently resides in Middlesboro, KY). My mother, grandmother and I now live in Lewisville, TX.
William Messer's mother was Susetta Griffith (d. Feb. 15,1998 and resided in Pine Knot, KY). Her parents were Bill King and Sarah Ellen Griffith who I believe resided in Kenvir.
Myrtle McCabe's parents were Eli McCabe and Mary E. McCabe (Storms). Eli's parents were William McCabe and Eliza J. Engle. Mary Storms' parents were Isaac Pleas (Ples) Storms and Mary E. Martin.  I read some of the names on your site to my grandmother and she knows several of the ones listed!  I hope to hear from some of the people here and hopefully find out more about my own family. I'm sure we can all swap stories.
  Thanks! Michelle    Email_______twopupmom@yahoo.com

-I am the Great- grandson of Jeff  and Dora Tomlinson Burkhart of Kenvir.  They lived at the mouth of Britton's Creek.  Grandpa  Jeff was a miner and many of his sons also made their living as miners.  My grandmother was Rachel Burkhart Cook, married to Hobert Cook of Evarts.  The last residence they lived in was known as Shine Mulkeys place on the hill.  My grandmother Rachel was Greatgrandpa Jeff's oldest daughter of 15 children.  My father was Earl Cook the oldest of five sons born to Rachel and Hobert.  It's funny how everyone from those mountains share a real love for the people and times of their  lives that was spent there.  I can feel it when I read through the Kenvir pages and see the hunger and desire to learn more about our families  My fondest memories are the summers spent on Britton's Creek.  Hot biscuits and gravy from the old cook stove didn't hurt anything either!!!  I'm willing to share memories and what pictures I have with the memories and pictures you might have.  It's hard to stop typing with tears in my eyes, ok I'm a softy but I bet you are too God Bless you'all.  Looking forward to hearing from anyone..
